Drive-By Shooting Kills Joliet Man In House

The Will County Coroner's Office has released the victim's identity.

JOLIET, IL — Joliet Police officials announced that a 27-year-old man was fatally shot around 1:45 a.m. Sunday after a car pulled up to a house in the 400 block of South Ottawa Street and opened fire on the residence. Joliet Police officers found the shooting victim inside the house and gave him aid until the fire department arrived.

"The paramedics arrived on scene but were unfortunately unable to revive the victim and he succumbed to his injuries," police said. The Will County Coroner's Office said the homicide victim was Eugene M. Holmes Jr.

Joliet Police said other people were inside the house on South Ottawa Street but none of the others were injured by the gunfire.

It was definitely a drive-by shooting, police reports show.

"The early stages of the investigation indicates that an unknown vehicle pulled up near the residence. Several people exited the vehicle and shot up the residence multiple times," Joliet Police announced.

Sunday morning's homicide is the latest in a series of violent shootings across the city. On Thursday night, a 13-year-old boy, Javier Cayetano of Joliet, was gunned down in an alley in the 300 block of South May Street. Two other juvenile boys were also shot, but their gunshot wounds were not life-threatening.

Joliet Police issued a press release mid-morning Friday explaining that the shootings were called in at 7:43 p.m. in the 300 block of South May Street, which is the Reedswood area.

On Friday, around 5 p.m., two men, ages 20 and 30, were shot while they were inside a vehicle near the intersection of Union Street and 4th Avenue, not far from the Washington Junior High School. Their injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
