Freight Train Derailment Near Joliet Causes Delays

No injuries were reported in a two-car freight train derailment that occurred around 9 p.m. Sunday south of the Joliet Amtrak station.
Union Pacific Spokesman Mark Davis said the cause of the derailment has not yet been determined.

The derailment caused delays lasting hours for Amtrak passengers. Buses were brought in to take the passengers to their destination.
Amtrak passenger Tammy Chavez told Network Video Productions that around 11 p.m. passengers were told buses would be coming to get them but wouldn’t arrive until 1 a.m. or 1:30 a.m.

Inside the train, Chavez said there were a lot of phone calls being made to people.
“A lot of people got rides,” she said. “I’m waiting on my ex and my son to come get me now. They should be here anytime now.”
Chavez was heading to Summit from St. Louis, Missouri.
The tracks were open again at 5 a.m.
