Joliet Cops Nab Alleged Murderer on the Lam From Ohio: Police

The wanted man tried to make a run for it from the Joliet cops, police said.

An alleged murderer on the lam from Ohio was captured by the Joliet cops, police said.

Desjuan Hayes, 26, was apprehended about 11 p.m. Wednesday and taken to the Will County jail.

Officers pulled Hayes over near the corner of Ingalls Avenue and Clement Street. He allegedly fled from the traffic stop but couldn’t elude the law for long.

Hayes, a resident of Columbus, Ohio, according to jail records, faces murder charges in that town.

“He’s accused of gunning down 39-year-old Michael Cumberland on his porch,” according to a story from WBNS TV. “A second victim, a woman, was critically injured by a bullet.”

Surveillance video showed Hayes running off after the killing, the story said.

Hayes waived extradition Thursday and will be taken back to Columbus, according to court records, but remains locked up in Joliet.
