Murder In Salem Village Laundry Room, Senior Citizen Arrested: JPD

A 61-year-old man was slain on the sixth floor of Salem Village nursing home, Joliet police noted.

JOLIET, IL — A 71-year-old Joliet senior citizen who lives in the 1300 block of Rowell Avenue at the Salem Village nursing home is now in the Will County Jail after killing another man in the sixth floor laundry room on Friday night, Joliet police said.

William"Bill" Paschall is now jailed on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated battery to a person 60 years of age or older.

According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English, Paschall and his victim were residents of Salem Village.

English outlined the following events led to Paschall's arrest:

  • At 9:25 p.m., officers responded to Salem Village Nursing and Rehabilitation at 1314 Rowell Avenue for an attack on the sixth floor.
  • Officers found an unresponsive 61-year-old man in a laundry room. Facility staff provided medical assistance to the victim until arrival of Joliet Fire Department paramedics
  • Police determined Paschall attacked the victim while in the laundry room after becoming angry about the victim’s use of the washing machine.
  • Paschall punched the victim in the head multiple times and used the victim’s walker in the attack, causing the victim to fall to the floor, according to English. Facility staff rendered medical assistance to the victim and called 911.
  • Despite the attempts at life-saving measures, the victim died at Salem Village. As for Paschall, he was taken away in handcuffs by Joliet's Police Department, and the Will County State’s Attorney Office subsequently approved first-degree murder charges against the Joliet nursing home resident.
  • The Will County Coroner’s Office of Laurie Summers will release information about the victim's identity.
