New Truck Terminal On Route 6 Near Joliet's Target Warehouse

JOLIET, IL — It may not be easy to see, but one of the busiest stretches of new commercial construction is happening along the bluff on Joliet's Route 6 corridor, south of Interstate 80. Hundreds of new jobs started up this year at the new Target distribution center. This summer, GP Transco opened its new corporate headquarters near the Target.

Both companies utilize hundreds of semi-trailers.

Now, another major construction is occurring near the GP Transco and Target warehouse. The Joliet City Council approved a special use permit for a truck terminal at 3350 Channahon Road in early October. The truck terminal development was proposed by Kyle Schuhmacher, president of Ketone Partners in Arlington Heights.

Over the past month, Joliet-based P.T. Ferro has been busy paving the new truck parking lot with asphalt. According to city of Joliet records, the entire Ketone Business Center development is 72 acres. A marine terminal is already under construction for Ozinga Concrete on the southern portion of the lot near the Des Plaines River.

The truck parking and maintenance terminal will encompass 20 acres, city documents show.

Here's the key features of the Joliet development:

• 36,000-square-foot precast building with multiple bays for truck washes.
• 796 truck trailer parking stalls
• 185 employee parking stalls

"It should be noted that the variation for the Target overflow parking area remains in effect and could also be utilized for this location for 774 truck trailer stalls," city documents show.

General contractors on the site recently told Joliet Patch that they are working to have the concrete building finished by March.
