Shotgun-Toting Man Threatens 'Race to the Plate' Volunteers, Forces Cancellation of 5K Run: Cops

The gunman threatened three race volunteers stationed along the course, police said.

A man armed with a shotgun threatened three teens volunteering at a charity 5K race in Crest Hill, forcing the cancellation of the event, police said.

The teens were volunteering for Race to the Plate, a fundraiser for St. Joe’s Baseball. The 5K run was to start at 8:30 a.m. today. The course winds “through the quaint streets of Crest Hill” and ends at home plate in St. Joe’s Park on Raynor Avenue.

The three teens were stationed along the course at the corner of Ludwig Avenue and Cora Street. About 8:20 a.m., two men in a maroon sedan pulled up. One of the men brandished a shotgun, pointed it at the teens and “told them to leave,” police said.
