Knife-Wielding Woman Stabbed Motel 6 Clerk During Robbery--Needed the Money to Bring Her Boyfriend to Joliet: Prosecutor

The woman said she might be able to come up with $25,000 cash to bond out of jail, presumably without even robbing a motel.

A knife-wielding woman stabbed a Motel 6 desk clerk during a robbery she pulled in hopes of getting enough money to bring her boyfriend out to Joliet, a prosecutor said.

Corinne Kestel, 28, appeared in Will County bond court Thursday afternoon to answer charges of armed robbery and aggravated battery. Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Messina said Kestel hatched her plan to rob the McDonough Street motel while trying to figure out how to fund her boyfriend’s trip to Joliet.

Armed with a knife, hooded and with a scarf covering her face, Kestel showed up at the motel shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday and threatened to kill the 43-year-old clerk, Messina said.

In the ensuing struggle, Kestel stabbed the clerk in the shoulder, police said, and also cut her ear and lower back.

A 57-year-old motel guest happened by on his way to get some ice and rushed to help the clerk, Messina said. He reportedly fought Kestel and held her until the police arrived.

A public defender was appointed to represent Kestel. Judge Theodore Jarz set her bond at $250,000 and Kestel—who can’t afford a lawyer and allegedly lacked the money to get her boyfriend to Joliet—surprisingly said she thinks she can come up with the $25,000 cash she needs to get out of jail.

“I guess if I have to,” she said. “I have a lot, but … “
