Funeral Saturday For Victim Of Wrong-Way Crash In Joliet

Martyn Flowers died Sunday. He had taught in Joliet's public schools.

JOLIET, IL - A Joliet man who had worked for years as a substitute teacher with Joliet Public School District 86 died from his injuries following the Jan. 10 horrific multiple vehicle wreck at Larkin Avenue and Black Road. Visitation for Martyn Flowers, 56, will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 at Second Baptist Church, 156 South Joliet St. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m., according to Range Funeral Home.

"Martyn was educated in the Joliet Public and Catholic schools. He graduated from Judson College with a major in sociology and a minor in Psychology. He had extensive training in the areas of the mentally retarded and the geriatric population. He was employed by the Joliet Public Schools, District 86, for many years," his published obituary noted.

In the aftermath of the Jan. 10 multiple vehicle collision at Black and Larkin, Joliet Police Department arrested Demetrius Greene, 33, of the 700 block of Joliet's Chase Avenue. After Greene was taken into custody on Jan. 16, the Will County State's Attorney charged Greene with three felonies and one misdemeanor crime. Greene is accused of blowing a red light, driving the wrong way against traffic, striking Flowers' car and leaving him injured, and then fleeing the scene at the busy Joliet intersection.

The dinner-time crash on Jan. 10 involved roughly a half dozen vehicles and forced Joliet Police officers to shut down traffic for several hours that night as part of their investigation.

As for the fatality victim, his obituary notes that Martyn Flowers is survived by his wife, Linda, three daughters, two granddaughters and three grandsons. To read his full obituary published online at Range Funeral Home, go here.
