Glow Stick Dance Party, Earth Hour and more!

As we celebrate the equinox and welcome Spring, we anticipate Earth hour, and Earth month.

We have been participating in The GEF's Green Education Week since February, and we continue to watch our seeds (monocots and dicots), bulbs, tubers, and mycelium thrive. Our red beans are sprouting, we've already harvested several different types of edible mushrooms, we've dissected flowers to further examine the parts of a flower, we've examined the root systems of plants and also learned the parts of the leaf.  The children tend to our indoor plants daily, and soon we will begin to start seeds to move to an outdoor garden!

In addition to discussing the equinox, we will spend the rest of the week planning and setting up for our glow stick dance party.  Dr. Montessori saw nature as the ideal learning environment for young children.  What a better way to build an awareness and let a child experience nature, than to participate in our activities in the coming weeks!  Saturday, March 23, 2013 @ 8:30pm our Glow Stick Dance Party will begin!  Details will be posted at the end of the update.  Work with us Wednesdays (or Thursdays) will give you a chance to come in and see our science curriculum first hand!  Also, Monday April 22, 2013 our Earth Day celebration will take place!  We are working with The University of Illinois Extension to have a master gardener come out and do a worm composting workshop, we are also going to have a seed (and bulb or tuber) exchange, and other presentations throughout the day.  As the schedule is finalized we will provide more details, or contact the school directly for more information.

Glow sticks and flashlights are recommended, pajamas are optional; parents must accompany attendees!

Earth Hour 2012 saw hundreds of millions of people across 152 countries and territories join together to celebrate their commitment to the planet - showing us what’s possible when we all connect behind a common cause.

Please help us create awareness and spread the word as we turn out the lights for Earth Hour!  Join us for music and fun, and help us spread the word!
