LA GRANGE, IL – The Lyons Township High School student who was injured in a May 1 fight that resulted in felony charges against another person is still receiving medical treatment, an official said Monday.

The same is the case for the student hit by a car May 10 next to North Campus, Superintendent Brian Waterman said at a school board meeting.

Both students have been described as seriously injured.

"Our hearts and our well-wishes continue to be with their families and their loved ones," Waterman said.

As for the altercation at North Campus, La Grange police continue to investigate, he said.

"This was an isolated incident and does not pose a further threat to our community," Waterman said. "We have appreciated the work of the La Grange Police Department. They have worked closely with our leadership throughout this investigation and certainly will continue to do so moving forward."

He also said, "Most importantly, we want to thank our caring community for the support and patience it continues to show during this difficult time."

On May 11, La Grange police announced they arrested a juvenile on charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery involving great bodily harm. They did not give the age, gender or hometown of the person or say whether the person was a student at the school.

The police also arrested student James Hernandez Jr., 18, of Brookfield, on a charge of battery.

The fight resulted in two injured youths, one of whom was severely injured and taken to the hospital, police said.

Waterman's comments about the crash may have been the high school's first to the wider community. The school emailed staff about the incident soon afterward, but did not include the high school's families. (Patch obtained the email to staff and reported on it.)

The crash happened on the east side of the Vaughan building on Brainard Avenue, with the student taken to the hospital, Principal Jen Tyrrell said in the message to staff.

Also at the school board meeting, Andrew Johannes, president of the teachers union, noted the recent incidents.

"The teachers would like to send out our thoughts and prayers to the two students who were injured and their families," he said. "Our hearts break for them, and we hope they are able to recover."
