Has Anyone Been Expelled In LTHS Attack?

Residents have debated for months whether the school expelled any students since the April 27 attack.

LA GRANGE, IL – It's been an online discussion for months: Has anyone been expelled as a result of an attack on Lyons Township High School's South Campus?

The answer is no.

Under state law, the school board must approve any expulsion. And the board has not voted on any since the April 27 attack.

School officials have not commented on the incident. A 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy were charged, with a 14-year-old girl listed as the victim. A video documented the attack.

Three days after the attack, West Cook News, a conservative online publication, reported that an anonymous source informed it the 16-year-old girl had been expelled.

That was impossible legally. The school board had not even met in the days after the incident. And an expulsion requires a process that involves an investigation and hearing. Expulsion is permanent.

In mid-May, Patch pointed out West Cook News was wrong in its reporting, yet the publication's story remains unchanged.

According to Western Springs police, the 16-year-old girl from La Grange was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor battery. And the 14-year-old boy from Countryside, presumably the person who took the video and encouraged the 16-year-old, faces a disorderly conduct charge.

Police said the 14-year-old girl who was targeted suffered injuries that required medical treatment.

The video indicates the 16-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy were waiting for the 14-year-old girl to leave a classroom.

A Patch story in early May described what happened in the attack.
