Low-Income LTHS Students Lose Ground

They are far behind the student body as a whole, according to state numbers.

LA GRANGE, IL – Since 2017, standardized test scores for low-income students at Lyons Township High School have fallen.

The SAT is given to juniors across the state.

In 2017, 28 percent of the high school's low-income students met or exceeded standards on the SAT's English language arts section. For math, 27 percent met the mark.

Last school year, 19 percent of the high school's low-income juniors met state benchmarks in English language arts, while 16 percent did so in math. Those numbers are about 4 percentage points ahead of their counterparts statewide.

Schoolwide, more than half of the junior student body as a whole met standards.

Neighboring Hinsdale Central reports better numbers for its low-income students, with nearly 30 percent meeting benchmarks last year.

Both Lyons Township High School and Hinsdale Central are among the 10 percent of schools that are rated by the state as "exemplary."

Last year, 12 percent of Lyons Township High School's students were reported as coming from low-income families.

The state released numbers Wednesday on its Illinois Report Card website.
