Virus Case Number Stable At La Grange Hospital

The Amita chain has not reported total virus deaths since the pandemic began.

LA GRANGE, IL — The number of coronavirus cases has edged up slightly over the last week at the hospital in La Grange, according to the hospital chain's latest information. As of Wednesday, the hospital had 26 coronavirus patients, two more than a week before.

In an email at 2 p.m. Wednesday, the Amita chain informed Patch that the coronavirus had not claimed the lives of anyone during the preceding 24 hours at Amita Adventist Medical Center La Grange. The chain has not reported the total number of coronavirus-related deaths since the pandemic began. Elmhurst Hospital, by contrast, regularly releases that information to the public.

In the same email, Amita said its hospital in Hinsdale had 37 cases of the coronavirus as of Wednesday, more than doubling its count a little more than a week earlier. It said three people had died from the virus in the preceding 24 hours.

"At this time, both hospitals have all the resources and support needed at their respective facilities to care for these COVID positive patients as well as all other patients in the hospitals," Olga Solares, an Amita spokeswoman, said in an email.

Earlier this week, Elmhurst Hospital said it had 35 deaths of patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. That was seven more than the week before. It also said it had 57 coronavirus patients, a slight reduction from the previous week.

As of Sunday, La Grange had seen its coronavirus case number skyrocket by a third over the previous week, but its rate of increase was lower than suburban Cook County as a whole, according to the figures. As of Sunday, La Grange had 68 cases, up from 49 a week earlier, a 39 percent increase, according to Cook County statistics.

As of Sunday, La Grange had 4.4 coronavirus cases per thousand people, up from 3.2 a week earlier. La Grange's rate is higher than nearby towns — 2 per thousand in La Grange Park, 2.7 in Hinsdale, 2.8 in Clarendon Hills and 3.8 in Riverside, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health.
