Cherokee Students Visit NBC Chicago Studios

Meteorologist Andy Avalos invites fourth graders to tour studios and learn about teamwork.

Students in Mrs. Jennifer Miles’ fourth-grade class at Cherokee Elementary School in Lake Forest learned about teamwork from the crew at NBC-5-Chicago through a recent tour of their studios and a discussion with Meteorologist Andy Avalos.

In Miles’ class, students broke up into groups and were assigned to write a letter to a team they were interested in learning more about. Visitors to the classroom included representatives from Starbucks, Egg Harbor and members of the Green Bay Packers. But one group received a reply from the NBC 5 Storm Team with an invitation to see the studios.

The students had an opportunity to ask Avalos questions on the teamwork that is necessary to report the news and weather.

“This was a very exciting opportunity for all the students to see a real team in action, as well as an amazing connection between what these same fourth graders learned last year in 3rd grade when they studied weather and using green screens,” according to a school news release.
