Lake Forest's Malles Leads Local Chicago Marathon Finishers With 798th

More than 70 and residents may be a little sore today, but they can say they successfully completed Sunday's Chicago Marathon out of more than 45,000 runners.

All 26 miles and 185 yards.

One even came from out of state. Steve Buchanan, who logged tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and is now a major in the Army reserve, came home from Seattle (Wash.) to run for the Pat Tillman Foundation. Buchanan, partnered during the race with Dan Bird. Both are 1995 graduates of

Bird got the best of him, crossing in 4 hours, 19 minutes, 48 seconds, while Buchanan finished just seven minutes behind in 4:26.58.

Locally, here is a synopsis of how Lake Forest and Lake Bluff runners performed.

• The top finishing Lake Forest resident was 51-year-old Larry Malles, who hit the tape in 798th place with a time of 3:02:01 - which was also the fastest time of entrants from the two communities. He competed in the 50-54 men's age group, claiming 24th place.

• Malles was followed by Lake Bluff resident David Walsh, who clocked a time of 3:08:32 for 1133rd place overall, 144th in the men's 35-39 age group.

• The fastest woman was Lake Forest's Stacy Abel, who finished 2224th overall with a time of 3:24:47 for 345th in the women's 35-39 age group.

• The oldest finisher was Lake Bluff's Julian Gordon, 75, who was 26,444th overall and second in the 75-79 men's age group with a time of 5:14:50.

• The youngest finisher was Lake Bluff's Ann Marie Nedeau, 18, who crossed in 9,565th place, 18th in the women's 16-19 age group, thanks to a time of 4:04:17.

• The family with the most members competing were Lake Bluff residents William, John and Robert Swee. William, 25, took top honors with a time of 3:27:34 for 2745th; John, 26, was next in 8599th in 3:59:27, while Robert, 57, was 18229th in 4:39:02.
