LFCDS Hosts Lecture on Child Development in the Digital Age

This Event is Free and Open to the Public

On Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at 6:00 p.m., Lake Forest Country Day School will host the first installment of the LFCDS Annual Special Speaker Series. The lecture will feature Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair who will speak on “The Big Disconnect: Protecting Childhood and Family Relationships in the Digital Age.”

A research associate in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and an associate psychologist at McLean Hospital, Dr. Steiner-Adair has presented keynotes and workshops at more than 500 schools and at professional conferences throughout the United States, Europe, South America, Central America, Asia, and the Middle East. In addition, she is the scholar in residence at the Gardner Carney Leadership Institute and has a private practice in Cambridge, MA.

Dr. Steiner-Adair will examine ways in which the wonders of technology and media change how children learn and grow, and she will show parents and educators how to reap the benefits of technology while reducing the risks it poses at every stage of child development. Dr. Steiner-Adair will identify the digital-age challenges that parents and educators face, and she will discuss ways to strengthen children’s social and emotional development to help them grow to be responsible, resilient, confident, and capable young adults.

Lake Forest Country Day School places an emphasis on rigorous academics as well as social and emotional learning and responsible citizenship. According to Head of School Joy Hurd, "A student's social and emotional well-being is a direct contributor to academic success." He notes that achievement test scores for students with social and emotional instruction are eleven percent higher than those of students without this training. "In addition, developing awareness, appreciation, and empathy ultimately leads our students to understand that they have the capacity to shape and direct their paths,” says Mr. Hurd.

These expert-led events, which are free and open to the public, take place at Lake Forest Country Day School in the renovated Performing Arts Center located at 145 South Green Bay Road in Lake Forest. To register, please visit: www.lfcds.org/speakerseries or call 847.615.6151.
