Readers React to Carly Rousso Sentence

She was found guilty this summer of driving after huffing an intoxicant for a DUI Death of 5 Year Old.

This week, Carly Rousso was sentenced to five years in prison for the DUI death of a 5-year-old girl two years ago, according to CBS Chicago.

Rousso, 20, was found guilty in June of aggravated DUI for driving her car across four lanes of Central Avenue in Highland Park on Labor Day 2012. She struck and killed 5-year-old Jaclyn Santos-Sacramento, who was walking on the sidewalk with her family. She had been huffing a cleaning product at the time, which caused her to get high.

Just before the start of her trial, Rousso pleaded guilty to one of the charges against her, that of reckless homicide.

Here’s how readers reacted to the news.

“This sentence is a total waste,” writes david. “Instead of housing her in prison for 4 years and living off the public dole for doing nothing, why not sentence her to 10 or 15 years of community service, especially to the minority communities?”

“We dont take DUI seriously,” writes Sal. “She chose to get high. She chose to drive a car. This needed to be a murder charge. Childhood traumas whether they’re real or not aren’t an excuse to kill a person.”

“She took a life!” Doug Purington writes on Facebook. “That’s criminal enough to at least receive the max!”
