Zion Cops Mum on Police Shooting Details

Police shot a man suspected to be taking photos wearing body armor this morning near a school.

ZION, IL - Authorities would not release the name of the man shot Wednesday morning near Lakeview School nor the number of shots fired by police.

A 38-year-old white man wearing a tactical-style vest and carrying an Airsoft BB gun was killed by police after an alleged altercation, according to the Lake County News-Sun.

Police responded to the area of 22nd Street and Bethesda Boulevard on a report of a suspicious person taking photographs of two local schools. When a struggle ensued, the man was shot and killed.

A Zion police official said the supposed body armor actually a homemade tactical-style vest with metal inserts.

Two Zion police officers were injured in the altercation and later released from a nearby hospital. Authorities did not identify the officer who fired the shots.

Nearby schools were let out at 11 a.m. with police escorts as afternoon classes were canceled as a precautionary measure.
