Mugger of Elderly Wheelchair Lady ID'd as Man of Many Names

South Side man rifled through wheelchair's storage compartment before running off with the 75-year-old woman's belongings Easter Sunday.

CHICAGO, IL - Police have captured the man they believed brutally robbed a disabled elderly woman in Lake View on Easter. It’s a man they say has had numerous aliases.

Police charged Darren Berlin, 61, of the 7500 block of S. Luella Ave. in Chicago, on Thursday with felony robbery of an a victim older than 60 in addition to misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property and criminal trespass to vehicles after he was identified as the man caught on camera robbing a 75-year-old woman in the 3600 block of N. Pine Grove on the morning of March 27.

Berlin, also known as Larry C. Tolliver according to police, approached the woman in an elevator, grabbed her and threw her wheelchair onto the elevator floor. Police say he then rummaged through the storage compartment of her wheelchair before fleeing the scene with her belongings.

The victim called the attacker “very sick” in an ABC-Chicago interview after the incident.

"He's in nursing home for two years and I'm alone," she said. "He not talk, nothing. Put me on the floor. Boom, boom, boom. Whole purse. He take it."

Berlin was arrested in an unrelated case, but was connected to the Easter morning mugging while in custody.

He has been known for switching up his name when dealing with law enforcement.

“Berlin has a lengthy history of utilizing aliases, including Larry C. Tolliver, during his interactions with law enforcement,” police said in announcing the arrest.
