Stuart Glicken Renaissance Man

He’s one of the many Renaissance men living at The Clare. Stuart Glicken, who has lived at The Terraces at The Clare for five years, is an accomplished gentleman of many interests and talents.

The retired attorney has become a published author. Glicken wrote “Dueling Quotations”, a book which he distributes to family and friends. “I’ve collected quotations that I like for years. I had about 300 and as I put some together I realized the harmony or dissonance of the quotations,” he said. “I have enough quotes left over for two more books.” Quotes include those that are humorous, contradictory and inspirational. “I have one that translates from Yiddish to mean that the Cubs stink,” he said.

A long time theater buff, Glicken was a co-founder and chairman of the board of directors for the Organic Theatre. One of his claims to fame in this capacity was contributing to the success of its original play “Bleacher Bums”. “Joe Mantegna was the lead writer. We would go together to the Cubs’ bleachers and talk to the fans and then we collaborated on writing the play,” he said. In addition to a couple of runs at the Organic Theatre, “Bleacher Bums” also earned rave reviews in New York and played a record thirteen years in Los Angeles.

Through the years, Glicken has been an avid collector of rarities including vintage pocket watches, artwork and the autographs of the Negro Baseball League. “My most famous autographs were Satchel Paige and Willie Mays,” he said.

Most importantly to Glicken, he is a diehard, steadfast, faithful Cubs fan; a position he’s maintained for the 70 years since they won their last pennant. “It’s just in my blood. Their record certainly doesn’t warrant my loyalty. I grew up with them and feel loyal to them,” he said. His favorite player of all time was Ernie Banks, and his favorite 2014 Cub is Starlin Castro. Glicken watches the Cubs play whenever possible and attended a game with a group of his friends from The Clare earlier this month. One of Glicken’s most prized possessions is a baseball autographed by the 1948 Cubs and another more recent one signed by Sammy Sosa.

Living at The Clare makes it easy for Glicken to pursue his interests and enjoy the vibrant Gold Coast location. “I go to a lot of restaurants and do a lot of shopping in the area. And go to Cubs games. You can’t beat the location,” he said.
