Depending on where you live in Illinois, you’re probably used to seeing horrible stories on nightly newscasts. Whether it’s a gang-related shootout that results in the death of an innocent young child, or a violent assault on a woman walking alone on a street at night, it’s hard to escape these tragedies that play over and over like a broken record.

And it is no surprise Illinois has more violent neighborhoods than any other state in the nation. While Chicago’s South and West Side communities know this all too well, the state’s worst neighborhood is not actually in the Chicagoland area.

These are the 25 most violent neighborhoods in America, including the six that are in Illinois. There is also a map of each neighborhood showing the area it covers.
