Area Doctors Fall Prey to Phone Scam: Sheriff's Office

Two area doctors, one in Homer Glen and one in Joliet, reported being scammed on Tuesday.

HOMER GLEN, IL — Two area doctors reported a scam to the Will County sheriff's office Tuesday. Police are advising the public that within the past few hours, a Homer Glen doctor and a Joliet doctor were scammed over the phone by someone identifying themselves as "Sergeant Perry" from the sheriff's office.

According to police, "Perry" told both doctors there was an active warrant out for their arrest and that in order to avoid being taken into custody, they must make their bond payments over the phone. Both victims were told to purchase pre-paid credit cards and provided the card numbers over the phone.

Police said the man's voice was described as having a heavy southern accent. The Will County sheriff's office reminds residents that it does not contact people by phone regarding warrants (or donations).

"We do not accept any type of payment over the phone per posting bond for a warrant," the sheriff's office said. "Posting bond for a warrant requires legal documentation. Documents must be filled out and money must be exchanged in person with an officer present."

If you receive a call similar to this, hang up and do not give out any personal information.
