Scott Darling to 'Party On' With 'Excellent' Blackhawks Helmet Design

The Lemont native is at it again with the creative helmet designs, with his newest giving a nod to the 1990s hit "Wayne's World."

CHICAGO, IL - It’s only right for Lemont native Scott Darling and the Chicago Blackhawks to give a nod to "Wayne’s World" more than 20 years after the movie’s relevancy. It was the movie giving relevancy to the Blackhawks some 15 years before the team became relevant again.

Darling, the Blackhawks’ backup goaltender and a proud native of south suburban Lemont, released his helmet design for the upcoming 2016-17 season with the team. On it will be an homage to "the No. 1 cable access program in the history of man."

The design - one of many Darling has had drawn up as a nod to his home Chicago region - features images of Wayne Campbell (played in the 1990s movie by Mike Myers) and Garth Algar (played by Dana Carvey) in addition to a sign for “Stan Mikita’s Donuts,” a fictional spot made famous by the movie that began as a popular skit on Saturday Night Live.

“Stan Mikita’s Donuts” was one of a few Blackhawks references made in the movie surrounding Aurora’s most famous cable access duo. Both Wayne and Garth are filmed multiple times wearing red Blackhawks jerseys.

The movie was released in a year, 1992, in which the Blackhawks advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals. But the team’s popularity was nothing in comparison to what they have now and what was given to their Chicago Stadium counterparts, the Chicago Bulls, at the time.

The Wayne’s World mask idea might be the most “excellent” Darling has come up with, but it isn’t the first that shows his pride in Chicagoland.

He’s worn helmets in the past with decals of Michael Jordan, the Blues Brothers and the Navy Pier Ferris wheel, according to a CBS Sports report.

Darling, who played youth hockey in the south suburbs before attending Lemont High School and later the University of Maine, was signed by the Blackhawks in July of 2014. He has since been the team’s primary backup goaltender to starter Corey Crawford.
