ZION, IL — The bail for a 57-year-old Zion man accused of murdering army veteran Corey J. Rhinehart back in March has been set at $5 million. Vincent C. Bevly was arrested on May 17 and is charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The charges come after a months-long investigation into the death of Rhinehart, who was first reported missing by his family on March 18.

Authorities are releasing few details following Bevly's arrest but did say Rhinehart was killed before he was reported missing, according to a news release from the Zion Police Department. In a statement released Saturday, authorities apologized to Rhinehart's family and the Zion community for how long it took to solve the crime and the "prolonged strain" it put on everyone involved.

"The arrest is a culmination of a long, detailed and complex investigation that involved hundreds of man hours by Zion police officers and detectives and members of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force," according to a news release.

Police believe Rhinehart, a 28-year-old Army veteran, called authorities at about 8:30 p.m. on March 15 — two days before he was reported missing — and then hung up.

Police traced the call and went to an apartment in the 2100 block of Gabriel Avenue in Zion to investigate. There, they found human blood on the door, walls and floor, WGN-TV reported in March. Police said Rhinehart's phone was turned off, and he didn't show up to the nursing home where he worked as a dietary aide in the three days following the phone call on March 15.
