Coroner IDs Teen Killed In Mundelein Shooting

The 18-year-old Mundelein man was meeting another person "for some type of exchange" when the shooting occurred.

MUNDELEIN, IL — The Lake County Coroner's Office has identified an 18-year-old Mundelein man who was fatally shot outside a Walgreens last week. Gavile Johnson was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center following the Thursday shooting where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release from the coroner's office.

Auhotirites say Johnson was shot at bout 1 p.m. Thursday by someone he apparently after the two met "for some type of exchange," according to a news release from the Mundelein Police Department. The suspect was initially inside a vehicle before getting out of the passenger side and shooting the teen.

The shooter then fled on foot, and the driver of the vehicle the shooter was in also left the scene, police said.

An autopsy showed Johnson died from injuries from a gunshot wound, according to a news release.

Authorities do not believe the teen was specifically targeted or that the shooting was due to a random act of violence, authorities said.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is assisting the Mundelein Police and Major Crime Task Force with the shooting investigation.
