2018 Halloween Safety Reminders: Lisle Police
Safety hazards and tips for parents and children planning on trick-or-treating Wed., Oct. 31 in Lisle.

LISLE, IL — In preparation for Halloween and trick-or-treating Wednesday, Oct. 31, the Lisle Police Department wants to provide several helpful reminders and suggestions to help make the 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. event safe and fun. Lisle police said their officers will be out in the neighborhoods to make sure trick-or-treating runs safely. Police said they're urging parents to remember these safety hazards as they emphasize safety with their children:
- Keep children close by at all times, as they may become excited and careless, possibly running into the roadway.
- Ducks is the time of day when visibility is poorest for drivers.
- Bulty trick-or-treat bags, unsafe and too large of shoes, masks which reduce vision, and dark costumes are safety hazards.
- Flammable/billowing costumes in close contact with open flames from Jack-O-Lanterns or candles
- Foreign or dangerous objects or substances in unwrapped treats
The Lisle Police Department also recommends the following Halloween safety suggestions:
- Parents should always accompany young children
- Eliminate face masks due to poor visibility, and instead use face paint.
- Wear light-colored costumes, instead of dark-colored, for motorist visibility
- Make sure costumes are short enough in length to prevent tripping
- Begin trick-or-treating while it's still light outside, and bring a flashlight in case you're still outside when the sun goes down.
- Visit/trick-or-treat at familiar homes and stay in the neighborhood you know.
- Only give and accept packaged or wrapped candy, in addition to examining candy before allowing children to eat it.
The Lisle Police Department remind parents to know what route their children will take during trick-or-treating, who will be supervising them, and to also give their children a specific time to be home.

Police also ask parents to please leave their porch lights on if you're participating in the trick-or-treating event, as houses without porch lights on shouldn't be approached.
Police said they may even be passing out some candy to the trick-or-treaters who are following the safety recommendations.
