Morton Arboretum Grounds Stay Open During Coronavirus Shutdown

LISLE, IL — The Morton Arboretum is keeping its grounds open "as long as it is safe and prudent to do so" in the midst of the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Officials say they complying with Governor J.B. Pritzker's orders by remaining open and are taking precautions that include closing on-site buildings and indoor restrooms and canceling classes and events through April 30.

In a statement, Arboretum President and CEO Gerard T. Donnelly, PhD, said, "The Arboretum is committed to staying open as long as it is safe and prudent to do so, to provide visitors with the physical and psychological benefits of being among trees and outdoors during a stressful time."

Here are some other changes the Arboretum has temporarily put into place:

  • Shortened hours; now open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with entry permitted until 5 p.m.
  • No cash accepted at the gate, only credit cards or member cards. "Any-day tickets" can also be bought online, but don't guarantee same-day entry
  • The number of visitors at any given time will be limited.

Officials added that if it seems as though customers aren't maintaining six feet of social distance from one another, the Arboretum will opt to close.
