A Whole Week of Kindness

As we remember September 11th, a call to recommit to courtesy, concern, and compassion.

As we all know, this weekend marks ten years since that unbelievable attack on the United States.

Many of us will recall where we were, what we were doing, how we heard what was happening, and how we felt as we realized this country was under attack. As the country gained control of the situation, we focused on the rescue efforts with great hope.

We, as a nation, were pulling for each other as we waited to hear of survivors.  We listened to the President give us words of encouragement that we would overcome this terrible blow to America.

With so many images and audio clips already this week, I have been thinking back to that day. There are many unusual details that come to mind. For instance, it was a gorgeous day here in the Chicago area. There was a beautiful clear blue sky and comfortable temperatures. Whenever we get one of those clear days, I always think, "This is how it was on September 11."

The other really interesting thing that I remember is how we interacted with each other the days following. Remember how we looked each other in the eye and said hello? People held the doors for the next person. Some may have even let you merge in traffic with a wave and a smile. Many even asked others if they needed help with whatever they were doing.

We also were looking for any signs of trouble. We were vigilant in protecting this country and each other from harm.

The point is the attacks changed us as a people. But, there was no way for us to know how we would be changed. Once we could absorb what had happened, we just knew this country would never be the same. The most obvious change is all the security efforts we encounter on a daily basis. This has become a routine part of life.

Now think about your interactions with other people. Are those interactions at the same level of courtesy, concern, and compassion as they were following the attacks? I already know the answer and so do you. That show of togetherness, from the general public, through courtesy, concern, and compassion for others lasted roughly three days by my observation. September 11, 2001 was a Tuesday. By the following Monday, it was back to business while those out East dug for bodies.

As we mark the 10th anniversary of those lives lost on Sunday, I would challenge each of you reading this to make an effort to show some courtesy, concern, and yes, even compassion to another human being this week. I know we can do it because we as Americans love a good challenge. So there it is, a whole week of kindness. Can you do it? Will you do it? Be sure to comment and tell us what you did differently this week. Take care and God Bless America!
