Android: It's Coming, But Don't Be Scared

Android is marching forward.

By current numbers, Android has 44 percent of all phone systems already and some 17-plus percent of the tablet markets. Android, by Google, is marching forward at a half-million user rate additions daily, and is the major player in these markets.

I know you are saying, “so what,” and you may be correct, because the Droid Operating System is very weak when compared to, say, Linux or Windows. But its biggest plus is the cost, and its ability to bridge a device into these other OS systems. Droid devices allow us to do a smaller subset of what we do on our PCs daily, so I look at them as an extension of our desktops.

I recently made the leap forward into the purchase of a tablet, running Android Honeycomb, and have found it to be just enough in functionality that I can do the basics. I still require my PC for real computer power and can’t see that changing any time soon. Will the Android pass Windows and Linux, or will it take years to develop further into a real operating system? Time will tell, because it has taken Linux and Windows many years to get it (almost) right.

You may also be saying, "What about Apple and its products?" Like Android, Apple slides into the same marketplace, and maybe a little into that PC marketplace also. The issue with Apple is that they haven’t opened the OS up to others, and until they do, they will just be another player in the sea of manufacturers of hardware with a cool interface, and not an OS marvel in the industry.

So don’t fear it, because it is here and will be for a long time. Just give it a few more years, and just maybe, it will be one of the great operating systems we all hope for.
