The Heat is Here and My Dogs Still Need to Walk

Hot and humid - a dog still wants to walk.

So, we’ve waited all these long, cool, wet months for some warmer weather. Well, it’s here all right. With the expected high temperatures and humidity, it’s time to take some precautions over next few days. It’s always a good idea to have water with you and slow down a bit. There’s no sense in overdoing it and doing yourself in.

But, what about the dog? Now, the dog will still need to be walked, that’s not going to change. They won't slow down, at least not right away. Your dog will be ready to go trotting down the sidewalk, but most likely will not need to go as far. Dogs become tired or overheated very quickly in this type of weather.

Here are some of my tips for walking your dog in the heat. First, plan shorter walks more often. I think it would be best to walk early in the morning and later in the evening. Before the rooster crows is ideal. Walking during the peak heat of the afternoon should be avoided if possible.

Second, make sure you have water for both you and your dog. You may find yourself standing in the shade waiting for your dog to decide when he or she is ready to walk again. This can range from one minute to 15 minutes or more, depending on the action across the street. I speak from experience here. After providing nothing short of a mini picnic for the dogs, I have found it especially helpful to have some water on hand for myself as I wait for my walking orders.

Third, enjoy the quiet time while your dog sleeps for hours after walking in the heat and humidity. I have actually gotten some work done during this time. And finally, be sure to get a good night’s sleep so you can wake up early and do it all over again. Ahhh summer…enjoy!
