Free GED services for youth

John Hoekstra holds the encouraging results of a GED practice test.

The Kendall Youth Employment Program (KYEP) is offering free GED tutoring and other services to youth 16 through 24 years of age. Youth must live in Kendall, Kane, or Dekalb County and apply to join the program.

“We provide a unique blend of GED services that aren’t available anywhere else”, said Laura Stransky, KYEP teacher. “After assessing a youth’s academic prowess, we tutor one-on-one to strengthen weak areas and we also give access to websites and worksheets that specifically help prepare for the GED test.”

John Hoekstra, 17, joined the program in July in order to get his GED as soon as possible. “I am doing work at home, but the one-on-one tutoring seems to get me through things I couldn’t master on my own,” said Hoekstra.

The new version of the GED test that began in January 2014 is significantly more rigorous than the previous version because it is aligned with Common Core Standards. Youth who are 16 or 17 years old must provide documentation of formal withdrawal from high school.

KYEP is a program of the Grundy-Kendall Regional Office of Education and is housed at 109 W. Ridge St., Yorkville. KYEP is funded by the River Valley Workforce Development Board. For more information, call 630-553-4166 or go to the Services tab at http://roe24.org.
