Kifowit Recognizes International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit

AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, is drawing attention to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Tuesday, as part of her ongoing efforts to provide victims a voice in the legal process.

“We can’t stand silently by as women find themselves becoming victims at hands of both strangers and companions,” Kifowit said. “It is important we raise awareness of violence women face and take the necessary steps to combat these grave injustices.”

Tuesday, November 25 marks the 15th annual International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The day is part of the United Nations’ campaign to end violence against women. Kifowit stands by the goals of this campaign, which include adopting and enforcing new laws to address, prevent, and punish all forms of violence against women.

This year, Kifowit helped pass legislation to strengthen the rights of crime victims, especially crimes against women. Kifowit sponsored House Bill 3744 which gives judges the ability to require GPS tracking of people charged with domestic battery or kidnapping-related crimes as a condition of bail. A judge can do so even if the accused has not violated an order of protection.

“Victims of domestic violence will now be better protected from those who seek to cause them harm by giving law enforcement additional tools to protect them and their families,” Kifowit said. “I will continue to fight for stronger protections for victims and support legislation to keep dangerous criminals behind bars.”
