No Second Chances For Dogs That Bite: Montgomery Trustee
The village board is exploring whether dog should be euthanized after a single incident.
MONTGOMERY, IL — After several recent dog attacks — including one involving a village code enforcement officer who was bitten by a dog that had a record of attacking people — one Montgomery trustee wants to implement a policy that dogs be euthanized after a single attack. Steve Jungermann took the "no second chance" stance at a June 12 board meeting, according to Kendall County Now.
One dog attack last year — in Boulder Hill's SuzanJohn Park — resulted in the dog, which police said had a history of biting, being shot by a bystander. About a month later, a dog was shot and killed by a Kendall County deputy after it bit a family member. In another incident, a Montgomery officer was bitten by a pit bull.
“Once a dog has attacked a person, as far as I’m concerned there is no second chance, the dog is euthanized,” Jungermann said at the recent board meeting. But other board members questioned whether a dog should be put down due to a single incident, according to Kendall County Now. Montgomery Police Chief Daniel Meyers said he would discuss the issue further with the village attorney.
