Removing Barriers for Students Without Housing in Illinois: 20 Years of Charlie’s Law
In 1993, a homeless
child named Charlie was turned away from the school he previously attended
after his family lost housing and moved into a homeless shelter. As a result, a
law was passed to secure stability in school for children like Charlie. Many of
the provisions of Charlie’s Law were later incorporated into the 2001
reauthorization of the federal McKinney-Vento Act, in which thousands of
children have benefited.
Join us for a
panel discussion commemorating the 20th anniversary of this important law. Learn how the law has
helped many children like Charlie and the current challenges to ensure equal
access to education for all students.
