Vote Yes for Better Roads and Property Tax Relief

Montgomery Residents have the opportunity to vote in favor of Better Roads and Property Tax Relief in the November 4th General Election.

It is not often that voters are presented with a win-win proposition. Fortunately for the residents of Montgomery, that is exactly what we get when we vote YES on the referendum to provide better roads and property tax relief for Montgomery residents. Montgomery currently spends $650,000.00 annually to maintain our 74 miles of roadway. As the number of Montgomery residents has increased, so has the amount of traffic on our roads. Village Engineers now estimate that we need to be spending $2.2 million every year in order to keep our roads safe and usable. Unfortunately, at the same time this increased funding for roads is needed, our village is being confronted with a lack of funding at the federal, state and local levels. Action is needed to ensure that we do not face crumbling roadways, and the multitude of problems associated with a deteriorating infrastructure.

The referendum will mandate a 15% reduction of Montgomery’s portion on your property tax bill. The accompanying 1% sales tax increase will broaden the tax base by making sure that those who do their shopping in Montgomery contribute to maintaining the roads they use to get here. Not everything will be subject to the 1% sales tax increase. For example, tobacco, alcohol and car parts would be subject to the modest sales tax increase. Necessities such as groceries, medicine and services will not be subject to the increased sales tax. We have a responsibility to do what is necessary to maintain our roads.

Well maintained roadways provide safe passage for our families, and increase property values. The fact that Montgomery residents will also receive a property tax rebate makes this a win-win referendum for Montgomery residents. It is my sincere hope that every Montgomery resident of voting age will join me in voting YES on the referendum for better roads and property tax relief.
