Edward, Elmhurst Hospital ERs named recipients of Lantern Award

Edward, which was also recognized in 2011, 2014 and 2017, is one of only two hospitals in the country to be honored four times.

The Emergency Departments (ED) at Edward Hospital in Naperville and Elmhurst Hospital have been named 2020 recipients of the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award. The award recognizes EDs that demonstrate excellent practice and innovative performance through leadership, education, advocacy and research.

Edward and Elmhurst Hospitals were two of 25 Lantern Award recipients named by the ENA, including the first two international EDs (in Australia and the United Arab Emirates) to earn the prestigious honor.

Edward, which was also recognized in 2011, 2014 and 2017, is one of only two hospitals in the country to be honored four times. This is Elmhurst Hospital’s first Lantern Award. Edward and Elmhurst Hospitals are two of only five EDs in Illinois with Lantern recognition, which is valid for three years.

Edward offers 24/7 emergency services at Edward Hospital in Naperville, 801 S. Washington St. and on its Edward Plainfield campus at 127th St. and Van Dyke Rd. Elmhurst Hospital provides 24/7 emergency services on its campus located at 155 E. Brush Hill Rd.

The Lantern Award is named in honor of Florence Nightingale, who is credited with changing nursing from an untrained job to a skilled, science-based profession. She is referred to as the “Lady of the Lamp” for her actions during the Crimean War when she worked deep into the night, bringing a lantern with her as she tended to wounded British soldiers as they slept.
