Naperville Smoke Tests Continue

Naperville's smoke tests from last month will continue starting this week in several subdivisions.

NAPERVILLE, IL -- Naperville officials announced a series of smoke tests that will take place in the Brookdale, Pebblewood and surrounding subdivisions in a press release. Tests began on July 17.

Smoke testing, when workers pump smoke into sewer systems, is an effective way of detecting leaks in sewage systems. They know there's a leak when smoke is visible on the surface.

The non-toxic smoke will also identify any roof, footing or patio drains connected to the sewer system in their continuation of the testing.

Smoke will not enter buildings unless they have faulty drain pipes inside. Naperville officials note that it is normal for smoke to come out of the sewer vent stack on the roof of a home or business.

The work is expected to last about four weeks, weather permitting.
