NAPERVILLE’S NV ULTIMATE CLUB SENDS 8 TO WORLD TRYOUTS
(
USA Ultimate Worlds tryouts start this weekend and eight kids from Naperville’s NV Ultimate Club will be in attendance.
USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States, is pleased to announce the athletes who have been selected to attend one of two tryouts for the 2016 National Teams that will represent the U.S. at the World Junior Ultimate Championships (WJUC) in Wroclaw, Poland, this summer. USA Ultimate will send select teams in the girls’ and open divisions to compete at the championships.
More than 400 youth athletes from all over the country submitted applications to be considered for the Under-20 National Teams. Of the applicants, 101 men and 101 women have been selected by the coaching staffs to attend one of two tryout camps.
The east coast tryout camp will be held January 23-24, in Orlando, Fla. The west coast tryout camp will be held January 30-31, in Seattle, Wash. Final rosters will be announced in February.
The Naperville NV Ultimate Club has a record eight NV Ultimate current and alumni players that made tryouts: Kelly Crowley, Stephany Stumphauzer, Megan Halverson, Mindy Radike, Mary Sullivan, Ben Sabourin, Ben Swiatek, and Dylan Power.
“I cannot begin to express how proud of these players I am for making it this far,” Head Coach Java says. “It is truly an accomplishment. But they must know, whether they make the team or not, they represent all that is great about this sport and they are all amazing people. I hope they have fun and that they enjoy the moment.”
The 2016 World Junior Ultimate Championships will be held July 31-Aug. 6, 2016, in Wroclaw, Poland, and will be hosted by the World Flying Disc Federation and the Polish Ultimate Players Association. WJUC was last held in Lecco, Italy, in 2014. The United States earned two medals at the event, a gold in the girls’ division, and a silver in the open division.
“This is the opportunity of a lifetime for all of the kids lucky enough to receive an invite,” says Ben Swiatek’s mother, Michelle. “I am proud of each and every one of them for how far they have come and the NV Ultimate Frisbee Club program that produced a record number of player invites this year; so, here we go...let’s show the USA Ultimate community why NV is one of the best programs in the nation...go with spirit and the desire to do your best...no worry or expectations.”
About NV Ultimate
In 2007, Arnoush Javaherian (aka “Java”) was in his first year as a teacher at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois. Java is a science teacher that teaches Anatomy and Physiology and had a desire to coach a high school Ultimate Frisbee Club.
Ultimate Frisbee is a physically demanding sport that involves running, agility, and jumping in addition to many other mental qualities. It is a non-contact sport played by two teams of seven players. The object is to score a set amount of goals before the other team. Players may not run with the disc. Players may only pass the disc in order to advance their position.
The game is a continuous string of passing where turnovers cause immediate change of possession of the disc. It is a game based on Sportsmanship as it has no officials and is a game where the players on the field make the calls. In essence, it is the “Ultimate” team sport.
With the help of Neuqua Valley student, Ben Rehmann, Java spent much of 2007-2008 planning for the new Naperville club. Soon word spread and other students showed interest and became an integral part of developing the core of what would become NV Ultimate – creating a logo, designing Frisbees, and forming a mission that promoted the sport of Ultimate Frisbee; provided an environment in which players can play and enjoy the game of Ultimate Frisbee; teaching players to play within the “Spirit of the Game”; and encouraging the each team member to become “People of Integrity”. The NV Ultimate Club is registered 501c3 Corporation and relies on the support of local and national sponsors.
