Residents Pick New Lenox's Best Pizza

Papa Joe's, Beggar's and Little Joe's won award for the best local pizza at a weekend event that benefited the Cancer Support Center in Mokena.

New Lenox residents helped raise more than $3,800 to help provide free local programs for people diagnosed with cancer and their families.

The main draw for the event, which led hundreds of people to , was a question that many love to debate: Who serves the best pizza in New Lenox?

For $10, community members could participate in a blind taste test of 11 local restaurant's pizza in four categories: cheese, pepperoni, sausage and specialty. The event raised about $4,000, all of which will be donated to the in Mokena.

Event organizer Tim Howe said 142 extra-large pizzas were served at the event, all of which were donated by the following restaurants: , , , , , , , , , and

I tried the specialty pizzas, which included a nice variety: barbecue chicken, deep-dish, pizza with goat cheese and lots more. Each slice of pizza came on a paper plate that was marked with a color so attendees didn't know where the pizza came from. Here's who won:

  • Best Cheese: Little Joe's
  • Best Pepperoni: Beggar's Pizza
  • Best Sausage: The Original Papa Joe's
  • Best Specialty: The Original Papa Joe's
