$10,000 Reward Offered After Grandfather Killed In Hit-And-Run

The family offered a reward for information leading to the driver who fatally struck an 86-year-old Morton Grove grandfather Friday.

MORTON GROVE, IL — The family of a Morton Grove grandfather killed in a hit-and-run crash Friday has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible.

Leonid "Leo" Belogur, 86, of the 9000 block of Waukegan Road, Morton Grove, was crossing Shermer Road at Greenwood Street around 5 p.m. on Friday when he was fatally struck by a southbound car. He was pronounced dead shortly before 5:30 p.m., according to Morton Grove police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

"We are devastated by the loss of our father, Leo Belogur, under such horrific circumstances," his family said in a statement. "He immigrated to this country in the late 1980s and worked tirelessly to provide for his family."

Belogur had had three children and seven grandchildren. His family asked anyone who noticed a vehicle that may have been involved with significant damage to its windshield or front end to contact Morton Grove police at 847-470-5200.

Belogur was a retired engineer who lived near the site of the crash. A Ukrainian native who emigrated from Latvia, he was out for his nightly walk when he was struck and killed on Shermer Road.

"It is a tragedy that someone can have so little regard for human life as to hit a human being in a crosswalk and just keep driving," his family said. "He will be incredibly missed."
