Arrests Over Fake, Real Guns; DUI Drivers Strike Houses: Blotter
Incidents and arrests from the Niles Police Department blotter from Sept. 28 to Oct. 19.

NILES, IL — The following information comes from the Niles Police Department as a record of police activity and those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent mere accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. All persons named are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
INCIDENTS
UNLAWFUL USE OF CREDIT CARD
Police are investigating a report that an employee of a dental company in the 7700 block of Milwaukee Avenue reportedly racked up more than $30,000 in unauthorized charges prior to Sept. 28.
DISORDERLY CONDUCT
A 49-year-old Wauconda man and a 29-year-old Palatine man were cited for disorderly conduct and banned from the Ichiban Buffet, 8780 W. Dempster St., following a fight around 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 1. Police were told the argument concerned whether one of the men was cheating on his wife. One of the men was recording the incident and refused to stop. The other man tried to put him in a headlock, but fell to the floor instead.

FELONY THEFT
Police were called to the Walgreens around 9 p.m. on Oct. 2 for a report that two men that just stolen 46 boxes of over-the-counter drugs from the medication aisle worth about $1,190 and fled.
COMMERCIAL BURGLARY
Someone stole a cash drawer and a laptop computer from a bookstore in the 8800 block of North Milwaukee Avenue between 7 p.m. on Oct. 3 and 9:45 a.m. on Oct. 4.

HOME BURGLARY
A resident in the 8700 block of Shermer Road reported their home had been burglarized between about 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 and 1 a.m. on Oct. 6.
STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a car that had a key fob left inside while parked in a lot in the 6700 block of North Milwaukee Avenue between 11 a.m. and 12:22 p.m. on Oct. 9.
CAR BURGLARY
Someone smashed a window and stole a black briefcase from a car parked outside a business in the 6300 block of West Touhy Avenue between about 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 11. The briefcase contacted checks, about $200 in cash and a loaded Glock handgun.
STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a Dodge Challenger that was locked in a driveway in the 6900 block of West Fargo Avenue between 4:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. on Oct. 15.
IDENTITY THEFT
An Olcott Avenue resident reported on Oct. 16 that someone had been making numerous fraudulent transactions using his identity since August. Someone opened credit card accounts with Home Depot and Saks Fifth Avenue, he received a delivery of a fungal cream package he never bought, he someone made an unauthorized $300 charge on his Macy's credit card, then someone bought an Apple laptop worth about $3,000 using his Best Buy credit card. It was picked up by a person claiming to be him in Burbank. The resident has subsequently frozen his accounts and placed fraud alerts on his credit.
ARRESTS
Justin J. Turley, 21, of the 3500 block of North Prairie Avenue in Chicago, was arrested at the Niles Police Department around 6 p.m. on Sept. 28 after detectives picked him up from the DuPage County Jail on a prior warrant related to a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Jose L. Garcia, 38, of the 8000 block of West Foster Lane in Niles was arrested around 8 a.m. on Sept. 30 and charged with domestic battery after police were told he bit a woman in the face and fled the scene.
Mohammad W. Zzaman, 42, and Mastura Begum, 32, both of the 8800 block of Jody Lane in Des Plaines, were arrested around 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 at the Golf Mill Center Kohl's and charged with retail theft for reportedly stealing 35 miscellaneous items including cosmetics, perfumes and colognes worth $1,844.17.
Montez Cannida, 49, of the 4200 block of Oakton Street in Skokie, was arrested on the morning of Oct. 2 at the Niles Police Department and charged with aggravated assault and retail theft. Police believe he cut off security chains from high-end purses at a store and when he was confronted by an employee outside, he pulled out a knife and threatened to shoot the store staffer.
Nebojsa Denikov, 56, of the 9000 block of Cumberland Avenue in Niles, was arrested shortly before 3 p.m. on Oct. 2 and charged with retail theft after she reportedly stole about $280 worth of items from the Home Depot at 8650 W. Dempster St.
Arvin J. M. Basilio, 29, of the 10000 block of Holly Lane in Des Plaines, was arrested around 4:50 a.m. on Oct. 6 at a restaurant in the 9600 block of North Milwaukee Avenue and charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools after police were dispatched by an activated business alarm. Officers found a shattered interior door and a running vehicle at the scene.
Donesha Robertson, 22, of the 1700 block of West 80th Street in Chicago, was arrested on the evening of Oct. 5 at the Niles Police Department on an outstanding warrant after earlier being taken into custody by the DuPage County Sheriff's Office on another warrant for an unspecified offense.
Binit K. Patel, 26, of the 9100 block of Keating Avenue in Skokie was charged with after fleeing the scene of a vehicle damage accident around 9:45 p.m. on Oct. 6 in the 8600 block of West Golf Road. He was later located by Skokie police and found to be operating an uninsured motor vehicle at the time of the crash.
Ali A. Abuglod, 18, of the 700 block of Rand Grove Road in Palatine, was arrested around 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 and charged with aggravated assault and possession of drug paraphernalia after police were called to a report of a man with a gun. A caller told police Abuglod had rolled down his window and pointed a silver BB gun at them while stopped at a red light. During a search of his vehicle, officers found a metal cannabis pipe.
Gabriel J. Porchman, 37, of the 3200 block of West Madison Street in Chicago, was arrested around 6 p.m. on Oct. 7 at the Walmart, W. 5630 Touhy Ave., and charged with retail theft of $216.22 worth of items.
Alexander Vanifatev, 32, of the 8800 block of Carleah Street in Des Plaines, was arrested around noon on Oct. 9 after he was reportedly seen walking down southbound Milwaukee Avenue with a black BB gun sticking out of his jeans. He was ordered to the ground, detained and charged with reckless conduct.
Viviana B. Rossi, 36, of the 5500 block of Giddings Avenue in Chicago, was arrested around 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Golf Mill Center Kohl's and charged with retail theft of a vacuum worth about $290 and a previous retail theft warrant issued by the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
Joseph J. Dimaggio, 37, of the 7100 block of Olcott Avenue in Chicago, was arrested around 1:16 a.m. on Oct. 14 and charged with domestic battery after police were dispatched to a parking lot in the 7400 block of Milwaukee Avenue for a report of a man hitting a woman inside a parked car.
Brandon A. Duran, 28, of the 900 block of West Sunnyside Avenue in Chicago, was arrested around 5 a.m. on Oct. 13 and charged with DUI – alcohol following an incident involving an SUV that had jumped the curb in the 9100 block of North Milwaukee Avenue and stopped on top of a small display at a fencing and decks company.
Alexander Umana, 46, of the 6100 block of Northwest Highway in Chicago, was arrested around 2 p.m. on Oct. 16 at the Skokie Courthouse and charged with aggravated DUI, for a crash causing an injury, and driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with a motor vehicle crash involving a car colliding with a house.
Benjamin J. Swantz, 59, of the 3400 block of First Avenue in McHenry, was arrested around 9 a.m. on Oct. 16 in the 7700 block of North Nordica Avenue on an active warrant from McHenry County for failing to appear in court as well as driving with a suspended license after police were called to a report of a vehicle lockout.
Jose F. Benevides, 39, of the 1300 block of Prospect Avenue in Des Plaines was arrested around noon on Oct. 15 and charged with stealing a battery worth about $150 from the Home Depot, 8640 W. Dempster St.
Martin G. Crespo, 22, of the 4800 block of North Avers Avenue in Chicago, was arrested around 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 17 and charged with unlawful use of a weapon following a traffic stop for driving 61 mph in a 35 mph zone in the 7900 block of North Milwaukee Avenue. During a search of his car, police found a loaded gun, a scale and about 6 grams of cannabis. He was issued citations for possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia and speeding 36 to 34 mph above the limit.
James R. Lopez, 20, of the 5000 block of North Odell in Harwood Heights, was arrested around 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 15 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic crash in the 8600 block of West Normal Avenue. Police were told he swerved off the road to avoid hitting pedestrians and crashed into a house. Police found an open bottle of Jagermeister in the center console.
Ossama E. El-Hannouny, 24, of the 7900 block of West Tameling Court in Palos Hills, was arrested around 12:52 a.m. on Oct. 16 and charged with obstructing police and resisting arrest after officers encountered him sitting in the driver's seat with his head down and holding a cell phone before providing police with a fake name and refusing to comply with orders.
