Burglar Leaves Cigarettes Behind; DUI Driver Flees: Niles Blotter

Niles Police Blotter: March 23 - April 5

NILES, IL — The following information comes from the Niles Police Department as a record of police activity. Readers are reminded that an arrest by the police does not constitute a finding of guilt, criminal charges — representing merely accusations by the state — are often dropped or reduced and all persons named are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

BURGLARY
Someone broke into an industrial business in the 6200 block of Howard Street between 11:45 and 11:57 a.m. on March 24, when police were dispatched to a burglary alarm. Officers found the front door had been smashed with a large piece of concrete and various power tools had been stolen.

CAR BURGLARY
A patron parked at a lot in the 7900 block of Milwaukee Avenue reported that someone damaged and burglarized their vehicle between 6 and 7 p.m. on March 27. Police were told someone took $200 in cash from the center console and dented the rear bumper.

HOME BURGLARY
A resident in the 8200 block of Octavia Avenue reported that someone broke in and ransacked their home during the overnight hours of March 28-29. Jewelry and cash were reported stolen.

THEFT
Someone reportedly stole close to $1,500 from coin-operated laundry machines in a semi=private laundry room area. The thief is suspected to have a universal key.

BURGLARY
An employee of a sandwich shop in the 200 block of Golf Mill Center Road reported that that someone broke in and stole money from the cash register during the overnight hours of March 30-31.

HOME BURGLARY
A resident of the 8000 block of Foster Lane reported that someone broke into their home between 2:30 and 11:30 p.m. on March 30 by forcing a window open. Police were told about $900 in cash were taken and the burglar left behind "new boxes of cigarettes."

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 6900 block of Birchwood Avenue reported that someone had shot hit window with a BB gun during the overnight hours of March 31 to April 1.


ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Joshua Rizo, 30, of the 900 block of Judson Avenue in Evanston, was arrested shortly after 4 a.m. on March 25 and charged with multiple counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol — a third offense and with a revoked drivers license — and resisting arrest of police following a traffic stop in the 7700 block of West Mondrow Avenue and foot chase. Police pulled him over for improper lane usage, he stopped the car and fled on foot. He was found running through the yards of nearby homes, as police conducted a K9 search. He was found to be intoxicated, and also cited for driving without insurance.

Mark A. Gerontzos, 28, of the 8000 block of Merrill Avenue in Niles, was arrested at 12:24 a.m. on March 27 following a chase on motorcycle and foot in the 8000 block of Milwaukee Avenue. Police pulled him over for not having a visible license plate and sped away before ditching the motorcycle and taking off on foot. He was taken into custody after a brief foot chase, and charged with fleeing police, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license.

David B. Nagler, 29, of the 9700 block of Lowell Avenue in Skokie, was arrested at 10:30 p.m. on March 27 at the Walmart in the 8500 block of Golf Road after police were told that he had been seen stashing $450 worth of various Pokémon trading cards and running out of the store.

Ingrid L. Campos, 39, of the 1100 block of North Central Park Avenue in Chicago, was arrested around noon on March 28 at a grocery store in the 5600 block of Touhy Avenue and charged with retail theft. Police were told she had been seen picking up about $80 worth of alcohol and food and running out of the store. Police also ticketed her for drug paraphernalia.

Cynthia A. Hoffman, 56, of the 8100 block of Field Drive in Niles, was arrested at 11:54 on March 28 in the 7900 block of Milwaukee Avenue and charged with driving under the influence. Police witnessed her hit the curb several times, determined she was drunk and took her into custody after she defecated on herself.

Timothy C. Denvit, 35, of the 700 block of Joliet Street in Crown Point, Indiana was arrested at 10:37 p.m. on April 3 in the 8200 block of North Ozark Avenue on two active arrest warrants in connection with unspecified charges, one from Johnson County, Illinois and one from South Chicago Heights, Illinois.

Travis M. Taylor, 29, of the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue in Evanston, was taken into custody at the Rolling Meadows courthouse on the morning April 4 and charged with felony domestic battery in connection with an investigation by Niles police into a March 7 incident in the parking lot of the Walmart in the 8500 block of Golf Road.

Munkhbaya Batsaikhan, 38, of the 9000 block of West Federal Court in Des Plaines, was arrested at 3 p.m. on April 4 in the parking lot of the Golf Mill Target store and charged with domestic battery. Police were called to a report of a disturbance, and learned he had struck a person multiple times in the back with a closed fist.
