DUI Charge for Man Accused of Crashing Into Cars on Milwaukee Avenue

NILES, IL - A Des Plaines man was charged with driving under the influence early Sunday morning in Niles after he allegedly struck six parked cars and rolled over his own vehicle on Milwaukee Avenue.

Police say Darrel N. Gatewood, 43, was the driver of the 2006 Volkswagen who struck the cars in the 8500 block of the thoroughfare around 4:10 a.m.

Milwaukee Avenue was closed to traffic in the area for nearly an hour after Gatewood was accused of striking a 2016 Jeep SUV, 2013 Hyundai coupe, 2016 Chevrolet sedan, 2015 Dodge pickup, 1995 Nissan minivan and 2016 Kia SUV, according to police. After striking the sixth legally parked vehicle, police say Gatewood's Volkswagen rolled over.

Gatewood refused medical attention, and was charged with driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating a vehicle without proof of automobile insurance.
