Fire Strikes Twice at Niles Home

A section of a residence on North Callero Drive broke out in flames twice Tuesday morning.

Firefighters in Niles had to put out two fires at the same house on the same day.

The blazes broke out in an upstairs bedroom and an attic directly above it at a home in the 9200 block of North Callero Drive Tuesday morning, according to the Niles Herald-Spectator.

The first was reported around 9 a..m. by an employee of a business nearby on Milwaukee Avenue who spotted smoke in the area. Crews arrived to put out the bedroom fire in minutes. The homeowner was not there, but arrived with her son-in-law as firefighters were leaving.

But soon later, firefighters came back to the residence on a report of smoke coming from the attic, and spent a few minutes putting out that fire as well.

The homeowner was hospitalized because she didn’t feel well following the second fire. The upper level of the home secured severe water damage.

A rekindling is possible, a fire official said, but the cause of both blazes remain under investigation.
