'People Shouting' Call Ends With Drug Arrest: Morton Grove Crime

MORTON GROVE, IL — The following information comes from the Morton Grove Police Department as a record of police activity. Readers are reminded that an arrest by the police does not constitute a finding of guilt, criminal charges — representing merely accusations by the state — are often dropped or reduced and all persons named are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

On Sept. 1, an employee at a cell phone store in the 6900 block of Dempster Street told police a man, described as white, stole a LG V20 cell phone from the display area.

On Sept. 1, a resident in the 7300 block of Beckwith told police someone damaged two flags located on his lawn.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

On Sept. 1, a resident in the 9200 block of Oriole told police someone scratched his car.

THEFT

On Sept. 2, a patron at Planet Fitness told police were told someone cut his lock and stole his wallet out of his locker in the 7300 block of Dempster.

THEFT

On Sept. 2, another Planet Fitness patron said someone cut his lock and stole his wallet out of his locker.

THEFT

On Sept. 2, a resident in the 8500 block of Georgiana reported that an unidentified man stole a bicycle from a backyard.

BURGLARY ATTEMPT

On Sept. 3, a caller in the 6300 block of Dempster reported hearing a loud pop and witnessing a youth running from the Mobil gas station through the alley. Police found scratches on a front door and a cinder block laying nearby.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

On Sept. 3, a caller reported an unidentified person slashed all four of her tires in the 8300 block of Concord Drive.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

A resident in the 7300 block of Palma reported someone egged both of her vehicles during the overnight hours of Sept. 3-4.

THEFT OF CAR PARTS

On Sept. 9, a resident in the 7700 block of Maple told police someone stole the catalytic converter off his car.

ARRESTS

CRIMINAL DAMAGE, AGGRAVATED BATTERY TO POLICE, THEFT

Jacob W. Woolbright, 19, of the 5200 block of Melanie Creek Cove in Arlington, Tennessee, was arrested Aug. 31 and charged with two counts of more than $500 in criminal damage to property, theft and aggravated battery to a police officer in the 9500 block of Waukegan Road.

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE

Whitney Weiherer, 31, of the 1600 block of Lone Pine Avenue in Springfield, Missouri, was arrested on Aug. 31 in the 8600 block of Waukegan Road and charged with possession of controlled substance, a felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. Police said they received a call at 3:21 a.m. of a suspicious vehicle with three or four people standing around shouting. The vehicle, driven by Weiherer, was pulled over. Police found a straw with white residue which field tested positive for cocaine. She also reportedly had two white pills inscribed with "Watson 853" in her pocket. The other three occupants of the vehicle were all released without charges.

WARRANT (AGGRAVATED ASSAULT)

Aewan Mershah, 21, of the 9100 block of Keating, was arrested on Sept. 1 at his home on a Morton Grove warrant for aggravated assault for allegedly threatening and spitting on officers while they were making another arrest.

RETAIL THEFT

Anthony D. Messina, 30, of the 3700 block of James Street, McHenry, was arrested Sept. 6 in connection with a retail theft at the 5945 W. Dempster St. CVS location. He reportedly stole items from the CVS when he passed the last point of sale without paying for the items. An alert had been issued for a person that had committed a retail theft in Niles, and when a Morton Grove Officer staked out the most likely escape route a suspect vehicle was discovered in the CVS lot. Messina was arrested for retail theft after he exited the CVS and he was also found to have an active arrest warrant from the Barrington Police Department. After interviews, he was found to have been involved in a series of other retail thefts in Niles.

RETAIL THEFT

Yolanda Tanner, 57, of the 1900 block of St. Louis Avenue, was arrested on Sept. 6 and charged with felony retail theft in connection with an incident at the Eddie Bauer outlet. She reportedly stole clothing items from the store after she went past the last point of sale and exited the store without paying for them.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT

A 25-year-old Skokie man was issued a Morton Grove local ordinance citation for disorderly conduct for urinating in public on Sept. 9 in the 5600 block of Dempster Street.

INTENT TO DELIVER MARIJUANA

Jake J. Vachachira, 19, of the 7900 block of Arcadia Street, was arrested Sept. 11 in the block of his residence and charged with possession of cannabis (30-100 grams) and possession of cannabis with intent to deliver. Officers approached his vehicle because it was parked on the side street with the lights off and people inside. Police smelled marijuana coming from the car while speaking with its occupants. After speaking with the suspect the suspect was arrested for a felony marijuana charge. He was also issued a Morton Grove local ordinance citation for possession of drug paraphernalia.
