Woman Fatally Struck By SUV In Niles
A driver told police the pedestrian "came out of nowhere" before the deadly collision Saturday night near Golf Road and Greenwood Avenue.

NILES, IL — Police said a woman struck by a car Saturday in Niles has died. Around 9:10 p.m., officers were dispatched to an area just north of the intersection of Greenwood Avenue and Golf Road, where a Mercedes SUV had just collided with a pedestrian, according to Niles police. It is the fourth pedestrian fatality in Niles in less than four months.
Lisa M. Bauer, 60, of the 8600 block of Golf Road, was crossing Greenwood Avenue about 75 feet north of Golf Road as the SUV approached from the north and headed toward the left turn lane to head east on Golf Road, police said.
The 44-year-old Niles woman behind the wheel of the Mercedes told police Bauer "came out of nowhere" before the fatal collision, according to Cmdr. Robert Tornabene.

The pedestrian was not in the crosswalk as she crossed from the west side of the street, and the light for southbound Greenwood Avenue was green when she was hit in the left turn lane, he said.

Paramedics from the Niles Fire Department took Bauer to Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition. She was taken off life support and pronounced dead at 1:12 a.m. on Monday morning, police said.
The driver is cooperating with a continuing Major Crash Assistance Team investigation, Tornabene said. There are no indications that alcohol was a factor or that the driver was impaired, he said.
Bauer is the fourth pedestrian to be killed after being hit by a car in Niles since Dec. 27, when a 72-year-old Niles man was fatally struck about 1.5 miles south on Greenwood Avenue at Betty Terrace. A 78-year-old man died after he was hit on Dempster Street on Jan. 25 and a 61-year-old woman was killed after being struck March 9 in the 8600 block of Golf Road — about a block from the most recent pedestrian fatality.
