105-Unit Assisted Living Development Rejected By Northbrook Board
The developer blamed opposition from residents for blocking the Heritage Woods proposal for Techny and Shermer.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The Northbrook Village Board agreed unanimously Tuesday to reject a proposal to build a 105-unit assisted living residential development at the southwest corner of Techny and Shermer roads. The Heritage Woods project, which would have built a three-story, 97,000 square-foot on three lots currently zoned for single family homes, was denied without objection as part of the consent agenda during last week's board meeting, according to the Northbrook Star.
The Northbrook Plan Commission voted 9-0 to oppose the project earlier this month, but the Village Board would still have been able to approve it at the Sept. 12 meeting. Residents who sought to block the project organized around the slogan "Save Northbrook" and raised concerns over traffic, trees and ad-hoc zoning changes. Developer Steve Barron told the Star he believed trustees had all been in support of his plan last year, but "an extremely robust opposition" eventually made it infeasible. After spending $300,000 pushing for the Heritage Woods site, he said he was unlikely to try to build the site somewhere else in Northbrook.

"I may have been amused if I wasn't on the other side of it," said a lawyer for the developers, according to the paper.

Opponents of the plan told the Star the organizing efforts brought the Northbrook community closer together, and the "Save Northbrook" group intends to remain engaged with any plans from other developers on the site in the future.
