20-Year-Old Northbrook Man Faces Gun, Drug Charges: Blotter

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

RETAIL THEFT
Staff at Nordstrom Rack, 199 Skokie Blvd., reported around 11 a.m. on March 1 that three female shoplifters had stolen various pieces of women's athletic apparel.

CAR BURGLARY

  • Someone burglarized an unlocked car parked in the 400 block of Skokie Boulevard prior to 1:13 p.m. on March 1, stealing unknown items, police were told.
  • Someone burglarized an car left unlocked in the 2700 block of Woodland Drive prior to 10:45 a.m. on March 2. It was not known if anything was stolen at the time of the report.
  • Three unlocked cars parked in the 2500 block of Woodland Drive were burglarized at some point prior to 11:33 a.m. on March 2. Nothing was stolen, police were told.
  • Someone burglarized an unlocked car parked in the 2800 block of Woodland Drive prior to 10:08 p.m. on March 2. Nothing was reported stolen.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A resident in the 1600 block of Techny Road reported around 12:30 p.m. on March 3 that they had been checking their credit when they learned someone had tried to open up a new account without their permission.
  • An Old Mill Road resident came to the Northbrook Police Department on the morning of March 4 to report two companies had notified them that someone had made unauthorized applications for credit cards accounts.
  • An Oak Avenue resident reported on the afternoon of March 4 that they discovered someone had opened up two unauthorized accounts while checking their credit.
  • A Spruce Street resident reported on the evening of March 5 that someone had used their credit account to make an unauthorized purchase for an unspecified amount.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE/CAR BURGLARY
Someone smashed open a back window and stole several items of unspecified value from inside a vehicle parked at the Northbrook Racquet Club, 2995 Dundee Road, at some point prior to 2:44 p.m. on March 5.

EMAIL SCAM
An employee of a busienss in the 2300 block of Shermer Road reported on the morning of March 6 that someone had sent them a spoof email that appeared to have come from a supervisor. The message asked for $10,000 worth of iTunes and Google gift cards. The employee made purchase at "several locations" and gave an unspecified amount of the money to the scammer. Eventually, the employee became suspicious and did not provide all $10,000 to the scammer.

ARRESTS

A 30-year-old Waukegan man was arrested around 9 p.m. on March 1 and charged with driving with a suspended license after police were called to the 700 block of Charlemagne Drive for a report of "possible suspicious activity." Officers found the man inside a vehicle and determined his license had been suspended.

Max C. Wehrmeister, 20, of the 1800 block of Walnut Circle, Northbrook, was arrested at 9:15 p.m. on March 2 and charged with drug and gun felonies following a traffic stop on a vehicle in which he was a passenger in the area of Dundee Road and Anthony Trail. Police pulled over the vehicle over an unspecified traffic violation. An officer noticed a Wehrmeister in the back with a backpack between his legs. A police dog was called to assist with the traffic stop and sniffed around the vehicle, signaling possible contraband inside and providing police probable cause to search its occupants. Officers pulled the driver and Wehrmeister from the car and searched each of them and his backpack, finding an open bottle of alcohol, two bags of a white powdery substance and a 9mm handgun. Prosecutors approved felony charges for Wehrmeister of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He was also issued a citation for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol as a passenger.

Paul L. Armstrong, 54, of the 2600 block of Blackhawk Road, Wilmette, was arrested at 1:37 a.m. on March 3 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and without insurance after he was pulled over for an unspecified traffic violation in the area of Shermer and Willow roads. Officers also issued him citations for improper lane usage, speeding, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol as a driver.

Kyle C. Clemente, 20, of the 600 block of Laramie Avenue, Wilmette, was arrested at 10:15 p.m. on March 3 in the area of Skokie Boulevard and Lake Cook Road on an active DuPage County arrest warrant connected to a petition to revoke probation after his December 2017 guilty plea to a charge of retail theft in Downers Grove. He was also issued new citations for improper use of registration and expired registration after he was pulled over for an unspecified traffic offense.

Pedro Arteaga Ayala, 35, of the 800 block of Piper Lane, Prospect Heights, was arrested at 1:34 a.m. on March 7 and charged with driving under the influence and with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the area of Greenview and Willow roads. Police said he committed several unspecifeid traffic offenses before he was pulled over and determined to be impaired and driving without a valid license. He was also issued citations for speeding, improper lane usage, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol as a driver.
