60-Year-Old Northbrook Woman Fatally Struck By Metra Train

Witnesses said the woman rode her bike onto the Shermer Road crossing Saturday morning.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The woman who died after being struck by a Metra train Saturday morning has been identified as a Northbrook resident who took her own life. Carolyn Jones, 60, of the 2300 block of Oak Avenue, died about an hour after she was hit by an inbound train at the Shermer Road crossing, authorities said.

The conductor and three witnesses at the scene told police Jones rode her bicycle to the Shermer Road crossing from the west around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, according to a Metra spokesperson. As an inbound train approached the station, the conductor noticed her dismount the bike and walk it under the gate before stopping on the tracks.

The conductor activated the emergency brake, but Jones was struck and critically injured. She was taken to Glenbrook Hospital and pronounced dead shortly before 10:30 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, which ruled her death a suicide.
