Burglars Do $15,000 In Damage; Apple Store Fraud Alert: Blotter
Northbrook Police Blotter: July 13 - July 19

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.
INCIDENTS
THEFT
A resident in the 2200 block of Cedar Lane reported at 6:46 p.m. on July 12 that someone stole a power washer from a backyard during the evening hours.

COMPUTER FRAUD
- A Shermer Road resident reported on July 8 that someone hacked their computer and demanded $1,200 to repair it.
- A Butternut Lane resident reported at 10:27 a.m. on July 13 that someone hacked their computer and demanded money to fix it.
IDENTITY THEFTS

- Someone used stolen credit card information to make an unauthorized $2,100 purchase from the Northbrook Court Apple Store. A resident got a text message and email informing them that an order they never placed was ready for pickup and contacted police on the afternoon of July 15.
- A Meadowview Court resident reported on the afternoon of July 16 that they mailed a check to a company in North Carolina that cleared in May. The resident later learned their signature had been forged as a check with the same number had been cashed in Arizona.
HOME BURGLARIES
- A resident in the 900 block of Enfield Drive reported that someone got into their house and did about $15,000 in damage sometime between 8 a.m. on July 13 and 2:30 p.m. on July 14.
- A resident of the Court of Harborside reported that someone broke open their front door and stole various items between 1:15 and 3 p.m. on July 17.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
- A resident of the 2300 block of White Oak Drive reported shortly after 5 p.m. on July 18 that someone had smashed the rear window of their vehicle without stealing anything from inside.
- A patrolling officer in the 2500 block of Crabtree Lane reported at 4:42 a.m. on July 19 that someone had knocked down two mailboxes.
SCAM ATTEMPTS
- A resident of Four Winds Lane reported on the afternoon of July 17 that someone had installed malware on their computer and demanded $2,900 in bitcoin, threatening to release compromising videos through a hacked webcam. The resident realized it was a scam and reported it to police.
- A Whitehall Drive resident reported on the afternoon of July 19 that someone called claiming to be from the electric company. The caller claimed the resident would have their electricity cut off if they did not pay their bill. The resident hung up, called their actual electric company and learned the call had been fraudulent.
- An Ash Lane resident reported at 3:28 p.m. on July 19 that they got a call from someone claiming to be their grandson. The resident said the caller did not sound like their grandson and hung up before contacting their daughter and verifying the call was fraudulent.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Jose A. Castro, 30, of the 3400 block of North Lewis Avenue in Waukegan, was arrested at 9:09 p.m. on July 12 and charged with driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop near the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Skokie Boulevard. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage, improper display and loud exhaust.
A 35-year-old Glenview man was arrested at 10:22 p.m. on July 14 and charged with driving with a suspended license near the intersection of Willow and Greenview roads after he was pulled over for using a cell phone while driving. He was also ticketed for unlawful use of an electronic communication device.
Ronal G. Monroy, 35, of the 3800 block of North Pulaski Avenue in Chicago, was arrested at 2:20 a.m. on July 15 near the intersection of Dundee Road and Bittersweet Drive and charged with driving under the influence. He was also issued citations for open alcohol and improper lane usage.
A 20-year-old Palatine man was arrested at 9:31 a.m. on July 15 and charged with driving with a suspended license, aggravated speeding and driving without insurance following a traffic stop near the intersection of Dundee Road and Colonade Drive.
A 25-year-old West Chicago woman was arrested at 11:36 p.m. on July 16 and charged with driving with a suspended license after she was pulled over for an equipment violation near the intersection of Willow Road and Founders Drive. She was also ticketed for improper lighting.
A 22-year-old Chicago man was arrested at 12:31 a.m. on July 17 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop near the intersection of Willow Road and Salceda Drive. He was also cited for improper lighting.
A 43-year-old Wilmette man was arrested at 10:43 p.m. on July 17 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop near the intersection of Willow Road and Three Lakes Drive. He was also issued a citation for expired registration.
A 73-year-old Chicago man was arrested at 12:50 a.m. on July 18 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop near the intersection of Willow and Founders road. He was also issued a citation for improper lane usage.
A 34-year-old Palatine man was arrested at 2:09 a.m. on July 18 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop near the intersection of Willow and Pfingsten roads. He was also cited for expired registration and no proof of insurance.
Lee W. Coffey, Jr., 39, of the 14200 block of South Green Bay Avenue in Chicago, was arrested at 12:22 a.m. on July 19 near the intersection of Willow and Waukegan roads after police noticed him commit several traffic violations. He was also issued citations for failure to display rear license plate, operating a vehicle without insurance, open transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage and failure to signal.
